Procéda à des expériences sur des animaux, avec du gel de silicone libre, et conlut que l'usage du gel libre était trop dangereux et inadéquat pour les humains. En fait, il fut clairement exposé par tous les fabricants dans leurs brochures, qu'un implant rupturé avant, pendant ou après l'implantation, devait être remplacé immédiatement et que le chirurgien devait prendre grand soin d'enlever tout le gel de silicone libéré. Pour les tissus du patient, la portée d'une rupture d'implant de gel de silicone est la même qu'une exposition directe au gel de silicone. Ce type d'exposition inclut l'exposition à toutes sortes d'autres produits chimiques: matériaux de remplissage, plastifiants, pigments, et stabilisants. L'expérimentation animale et les suivis, à long terme, de patientes porteuses d'implants ont montré que la silicone n'est pas inerte et qu'en cas de rupture, le gel libéré se disperse et devient nocif pour l'organisme. CONDUCTED ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS WITH FREE SILICONE GEL AND CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE USE OF FREE GEL WAS TOO DANGEROUS AND WAS NOT SUITABLE FOR HUMANS.As a matter of fact, it was pointed very clearly by all manufacturers in their brochures that if an implant was found to be ruptured before, during or after implantation, such an implant should immediately be replaced and that the surgeon should take great care in removing all free silicone gel. The significance of a rupture of a silicone gel-filled implant is that of direct silicone gel exposure to the patient's tissus. This type of exposure includes exposure to all sorts of other chemicals, such as fillers, plasticizers, pigments and stabilizers. Animal experiments and long term follow-up studies on implanted patients have shown that silicone is not inert and that in case of rupture, free silicone gel does migrate and is harmful to the body. It is therefore justifiable to state that if left long enough inside a patient's body, all silicone breast implants be replaced or simply removed before they rupture?
One thin remains certain: THE SILICONE GEL-FILLED BREAST IMPLANTS BEHAVE LIKE A TIME BOMB; THE CRUCIAL DIFFERENCE LIES IN THE UNPREDICTABILITY OF SPONTANEOUS RUPURE.

Révélaient que plusieurs des implants de gel comme ceux à solution saline étaient infectés. Il trouva des micro-organismes sous les pièces collés de Dacron, à l'intérieur de l'enveloppe prothétique et dans la couche de colle. Pierre Blais associa ce champignon à une espèce trouvée dans la région de Paso Robles, site de l'usine de Surgitek. Dans certains cas, il fut incapable de tuer par stérilisation courante, le champignon présent dans ces produits. Ces études suggèrent une fabrication très négligente et déficiente. Dans le numéro de juin 1978 de l'ASPRS JOURNAL, le chirurgien plasticien et éditeur en chef, D'Frank McDowell, signait un éditorial. Il mentionnait que la silicone de qualité médicale, libellé DOW CORNING 360 depuis 1963 était vendue non stérilisée à la pinte et au gallon. Il admit aussi que le risque de containation par bactérie, virus et champignon était considérable.
À l'opposé des silicones mentionnées plus haut il croyait que la silicone utilisée en investigation, libellée MDN4-4011, contenait moins de métaux lourds et autres impuretés. Elle était expédiée STÉRILISÉE. Tôt dans les années 1970 sous ma supervision, des études bactériologiques furent menées sur l'implant gonflable. Dans une expérience scientifique, les prothèses gonflables étaient remplies d'une solution bourrée de bactéries……..

Rumeurs d'un moratoire imminent atteignirent les médias:
Des dizaines de milliers d'implants mammaires remplis de gel de silicone, furent expédiés en consignation , aux chirurgiens plasticiens. Résultat, des milliers de ces implants mammaires, en date d'utilisation périmée, sont implantées à l'insu de la patiente. Selon la brohure d'un des fabricants l'enveloppe perd 50% de sa force de tension et le gel , 20% de sa viscosité après 6 mois. Au moment de l'implantation, plusieurs de ces produits ont perdu leur stérilité.

MORE RECENT STUDIES BY DR. PIERRE BLAIS REVEALED THAT MANY OF THE GEL-FILLED AS WELL AS THE SALINE-FILLED IMPLANTS WERE INFECTED.
To be more specific, he found micro-organisms under glue-on Dacron patches, within the prosthetic envelope and the glue layer. He traced one species of fungus to a fungus found in Paso Robles area, the site of Surgiteck's manufacturing plant. In some cases, he was unable to kill the fungus present in these poducts by standart sterilization. His studies suggest a very negligent and deficient manufacturing process.
In June 1978 issue of the ASSPRS Journal, Plastic Surgeon and Chief Editor, Frank McDowell, wrote an editorial. He stated that medical grade silicone, labeled DOW CORNING MDN4-4011, had fewer heavy metals and other impurities. It was shipped sterilized.
In the early 1970's, under my supervision, bacteriological atudies were performed on the inflatable implant. In one scientific experiment, the inflatable implants were filled with a solution full of bacteria….
When rumors of an impending moratorium on the silicone gel-filled breast implants hits the media, tens of thousands of such implants ere shipped from the manufacturers to the plastic surgeon on consignment. As a direct result thousands of silicone gel-filled breast implants with expired shelf lifetime are being implanted unbeknownst to the patient.
ACCORDING TO ONE MANUFACTURER'S BROCHURE, the enveloppe of a gel-filled implant loses 50% of its tensile strength and the gel 20% of its viscosity after 6 months. AT THE TIME OF IMPLANTATION SURGERY MANY OF THESE PRODUCTS HAVE LOST THEIR STERILIY.
